When you go down to the hardware store and purchase one, it will look something like the one below. It is known as a duplex receptacle, probably because it has room to plug two things into it.

The Black (120v) wire goes to the brass screws, the white (neutral) wire goes to the silver screws and the bare wire (if you are using standard romex) goes to the green screw.

When running power through the receptacle, I recommend using pigtails. The most important reason is that it will give you a more reliable circuit. If you look at the diagram below, instead of using the receptacle to feed the current through, you will be making the splice in the box and attaching a pigtail to the receptacle.

This will mean that the only load going through the receptacle is what you actually have plugged into it, Which means less chance for failure.
